Cardan u joint
U joint, also known as universal joint, is a joint connecting two rigid rods. The joint is composed of a pair of ordinary hinges with a relative orientation of 90°, so that the rigid rod can turn in any direction. It is still widely used in the transmission of vehicles.
The main concept comes from the gyroscope. Since the first universal joint was made by Robert Hooke, it is also called Hooke joint. In fact, the Italian mathematician Girolamo Cardano (also referred to as "Cardan u joint") proposed the idea of universal joints in 1545, a century ago. However, there is no record on whether he produced actual models. In Europe, people also call this device a cardan joint or a cardan shaft. The Swedish Christopher pleheim later reinvented the device, so it became known as the "polhem knot" in Swedish.
